Folk revival is not what you think. Twenty years ago this month, a Portland band shook the scene with an intimate, whisper-soft debut. Horse Feathers released Words Are Dead in 2006, straddling the freak folk and indie-folk divides like a bridge. Their music could hold its own against the emerging superstars of Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes. Justin Ringle's voice, at times almost a whisper, still charms today. The album's 20th-anniversary reissue is happening, and Horse Feathers will embark on a tour to celebrate. Their early sound helped pave the way for future folk revivalists.
