The Writer Behind the Records: Gary Carriero's Studio Life

Updated: Jul 15

Most people meet Gary Carriero as the artist. The records, the live shows, the 50,000-plus Shazams. But there's a side of his work that runs underneath all of it and explains a lot about why the catalog sounds the way it does. Before Gary is an artist, Gary is a writer.

The room behind the room

Gary writes. Not as a side hobby between releases, but as a working part of a writing team, sitting in the room where records actually get built. He writes for Ty Fyffe, the super producer and a genuine legend in the game, who also happens to be Gary's brother. That relationship isn't a name-drop. It's a workspace. When the two of them are locked in, Gary is one of the writers shaping what comes out of those sessions.

Writing for a producer of that caliber is its own credential. Producers at Ty Fyffe's level don't hand the pen to just anyone. The pen gets earned, session after session, by someone who can deliver under pressure and make a record better than it was when he walked in.

When the call comes, you make it happen

The studio life isn't glamorous in the way people imagine. It's a phone buzzing at the wrong hour and a window that won't stay open for long. Gary tells the story of a night when the word came in that Flavor Flav was about to pull up to the studio. No big team to lean on, no perfect setup waiting. So you engineer it yourself, you get the room right, and you make it happen. That instinct, the refusal to let a moment pass because the conditions weren't ideal, is the same instinct that built GetLife Records.

Why this matters

A lot of artists can perform. Fewer can write. Fewer still can write at a level where a super producer keeps them in the room. Gary's catalog reads differently once you know the hand behind it is a working songwriter first. JOY, Long Distance Love, Moonlight Dancing, 54321, these aren't accidents of vibe. They're written, and they're written by someone who does it for other people too.

That's the part of Gary Carriero the audience is just starting to see. The artist was always the front door. The writer's room is where the work actually lives.

Industry note: Gary Carriero is founder and president of GetLife Records, releasing through the label's partnership with Sapphire Records (Grammy-nominated executive producer David Veslocki) and its distribution chain.
